Experience:

This was my first time to learn typography, and as a beginner, I did find it difficult at first. But through continuous learning and practice, I gradually mastered the basic principles of typography and font design techniques, and gained a lot.

At first I relied on intuition and personal preference, but soon realized that I needed professional guidance and a systematic approach. With the help of teachers and classmates, I learned to think and explore independently, which is one of my biggest growth.

I especially like the font design assignment, which allows me to deeply understand the structure of fonts, and gradually find a balance between rules and creativity by converting hand-drawn sketches into digital fonts using Adobe Illustrator and FontLab.

Thank you Mr. Max for his patient guidance and feedback every week. He encourages us to develop a unique style and continuously improve our design thinking. As the most challenging course in my first semester, this course not only deepened my understanding of font design, but also laid a solid foundation for my future.

Observation:

Paying attention to details and being patient are my biggest gains this semester. The most challenging part of font design is to accurately transform the concept into a unified and usable letter system, which requires clear structural planning and meticulous adjustments.

At first, I mistakenly thought that typesetting was just "making the text look good", but after learning, I realized that font design starts with details, and even the length of a stroke may affect the overall vision. In the early days, I often ignored these and was eager to complete the work.

This semester, I gradually overcame my impatience and began to carefully examine each step of the process. Although the process was difficult, the progress made from the details made me feel accomplished.

Discovery:

This semester's study made me realize that font designers need to have three core abilities: structural modeling, technical execution, and tool proficiency. We must not only understand the differences in letter structure (such as serif and sans serif fonts), but also ensure that the design takes into account both aesthetics and feasibility, and master at least one professional font software and vector drawing tool.

I also deeply understand the importance of "balance" in design. Visually, typesetting should enhance the reading experience; in terms of thinking, we must be innovative while complying with design rules to form a personal style. At first, I often lost balance between freedom and norms, but gradually established my own design logic in continuous learning. "Finding a balance" has become my most important learning goal at this stage.
